How can Direct Student Loans help pay for college or career school expenses?

Direct Loans are low-interest loans for students and parents to help pay for the cost of a student's education after high school. The lender is the U.S. Department of Education (the Department) rather than a bank.

Direct Loans are:

Simple-You borrow directly from the federal government.

Flexible-You can choose from several repayment plans that are designed to meet the needs of almost any borrower, and you can switch repayment plans if your needs change.

What kinds of Direct Loans are available?

Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans- Your eligibility for Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans is based on the information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSASM). No interest is charged on subsidized student loans while you are in school at least half-time, during your grace period, and during deferment periods. Interest is charged on unsubsidized loans during all periods.

Direct PLUS Loans-Direct PLUS Loans are low interest loans available to parents of dependent students and to graduate and professional degree students. Interest is charged during all periods.

Direct Consolidation Loans - Direct Consolidation Loans are loans for borrowers who want to combine their eligible federal student loans into a single loan.

What are the eligibility requirements?

You must be enrolled at least half-time at a school that participates in the Direct Loan Program, and you must meet general eligibility requirements for the Federal Student Aid programs. You can find more information about these requirements on the Direct Loan website at www.direct.ed.gov, or by contacting your school's financial aid office.

How do I apply for aid?

You apply for a Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loan and other federal student aid by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The information from your application will be shared with the schools that you have identified on the FAFSA. Some schools have additional application procedures-check with your school's financial aid office to be sure. After your FAFSA has been processed, the school will notify you, usually through an award letter, of the types of aid for which you are eligible.

How do I take out a Direct Loan?

You must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). The MPN is a legally binding agreement to repay your loan to the Department. In most cases, one MPN can be used for loans that you receive over several years of study. Before receiving your first Direct Loan, you must sign an MPN that you'll get from your school or from the Department. Check with your school's financial aid office.

How much can I borrow?

The maximum amount you can borrow each school year depends on your grade level and other factors. It ranges from $ 5,500 per year for a dependent freshman to $ 20,500 per year for a graduate or professional degree student; however, the actual amount you are eligible to borrow each year is determined by your school and may be less than the maximum amount. There are also limits on the total amount of your loan debt. Graduate and professional degree students who need to borrow more than the maximum subsidized or unsubsidized loan amounts to meet education expenses not covered by other financial aid may be eligible to receive a Direct PLUS Loan.

What is the interest rate?

Direct Loans have a fixed interest rate that differs depending on the loan type and other factors. Check with your school's financial aid office or the Direct Loan website at www.direct.ed.gov for details and current interest rate information.

Is there a charge for this loan?

Yes. In addition to interest, you pay a loan fee that is a percentage of the principal amount of the loan. We deduct the fee before you receive any loan money, so the loan amount you actually receive will be less than the amount you have to repay.

How will I receive my loan money?

Your school will generally disburse your loan money by crediting it to your school account but may also give some of it to you directly. Your loan money will usually be disbursed in at least two installments.

How will I repay my loan?

When you receive your first Direct Loan, you will be contacted by the servicer for that loan. Your loan servicer will provide regular updates on the status of your Direct Loan and of any additional Direct Loans that you receive.

When do I have to begin repaying my loan?

Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans have a 6-month grace period that starts the day after you graduate, leave school, or drop below half-time enrollment. You don't have to begin making payments until your grace period ends. Note that repayment on a Direct PLUS Loan begins 60 days after the last installment of the loan for that school year is made; however, there is the option to defer repayment of a Direct PLUS Loan. See "Repaying Your Loans" on Student Aid on the Web at www.studentaid.ed.gov.

How much time will I have to repay my loan, and how much will I have to pay each month?

Generally, you'll have from 10 to 25 years to repay your loan, depending on the repayment plan that you choose. Your monthly payment amount will be based on how much you borrowed and how long you take to repay. You may choose one of several repayment plans:

Standard Repayment Plan-Fixed monthly payments for up to 10 years.

Graduated Repayment Plan-Payments that start off lower at first, and then gradually increase, usually every 2 years. The loan must be repaid in 10 years.

Extended Repayment Plan-Fixed or graduated monthly payments over a period of time, not to exceed 25 years. To be eligible for this repayment plan, you must have more than $ 30,000 in Direct Loan debt and you must not have had an outstanding balance on a Direct Loan on Oct. 7, 1998.

Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) Plan-Your monthly payment is adjusted each year based on your annual income (and your spouse's income, if you're married), your family size, and the total amount of your Direct Loans. After 25 years, any unpaid loan amount will be forgiven. (This plan is not available to parent Direct PLUS Loan borrowers.)

Income-Based Repayment (IBR) Plan-Your monthly payment is capped at an amount that is affordable based on your income and family size. To find out if your federal student loan debt is high enough to qualify for this plan, use the repayment calculators on Student Aid on the Web at www.studentaid.ed.gov or on your loan servicer's site. Your monthly payment amount may be adjusted annually. If you repay under IBR for 25 years and meet other requirements, any remaining balance will be forgiven. (Direct PLUS
Loans made to parents may not be repaid under IBR.)

You can change plans at any time. There's no penalty if you make payments before they are due or pay more than the amount due each month. For more information about these repayment plans, or to use our online calculator to calculate your estimated loan payment under different repayment plans, go to Student Aid on the Web at www.studentaid.ed.gov or to your loan servicer's website.

Can I ever postpone making loan payments?

Yes, under some conditions you may receive a deferment or forbearance that allows you to temporarily stop or lower your payments. For example, you may qualify for a deferment if:

You return to school at least half-time at a school that's eligible to participate in the Federal Student Aid programs.

You are studying full-time in a graduate fellowship program.

You are in an approved full-time disability rehabilitation program.

You are unemployed or meet our rules for economic hardship (limited to 3 years).

You may also qualify for a deferment based on active duty service in the U.S. Armed Forces or National Guard. Refer to the Master Promissory Note for your loan or contact
your loan servicer for more information about specific qualifications for deferment based on military service and for other available deferments.

If you don't qualify for a deferment but are temporarily unable to make loan payments for such reasons as illness or financial hardship, we may grant you a forbearance.

Can my loan ever be cancelled, discharged, or forgiven?

You must repay your loan even if you don't complete or can't find a job related to your program of study, or are unhappy with the education you paid for with your loan. However, we will discharge (forgive) your loan if you have your loan cancelled in bankruptcy, if you become totally and permanently disabled, or if you die.

We may discharge some or all of your loan if:

Your school closed before you completed your program.

Your school forged your signature on your promissory note or falsely certified that you were eligible for aid.

Your loan was falsely certified through identity theft.

You withdrew from school but the school didn't pay a refund that it owed. See Student Aid on the Web at www.studentaid.ed.gov for more information about refund policies.

You also may qualify for forgiveness of some or all of your loan balance:

If you teach full-time for 5 years at a school or educational service agency serving low-income families and meet other requirements; or

After you have made 120 payments on a Direct Loan while employed in certain public service jobs (additional conditions apply).

For more information about loan forgiveness options, go to Student Aid on the Web at www.studentaid.ed.gov.

Where can I get more information?

For more information about the Direct Loan Program and other Federal Student Aid programs, contact the financial aid office at your school or go to Student Aid

Question by college_chick: How lond does it take to process a student loan from Direct Loans? I am a student from California and I am going to be going to school out of state next semester. I cannot register until I have gone through orientation and that is scheduled for 5 days before the beginning of the semester so I was wondering if anyone knows how long it will talk to process it? I am going to contact the Financial Aid office on monday, but I just want a heads up so if anyone has been through the same thing, please let me know. I really worried about this and any useful information would be greatly appreciated. Best answer for How lond does it take to process a student loan from Direct Loans?:

Answer by Suddenly Human
You will not get your financial aid until at least two weeks until after the semester starts. (This is true for all new freshman). You will need to find an alternative source of funding to get you to the college. Perhaps a short term babysitting job or mowing lawns or asking the folks to drive you and your stuff there.

Answer by mickiinpodunk
Processing the loan and when you get any funds from it are two different things. And, of course, it depends on where you are in the process. If you have an award letter from the school with the loan on it, go back and read all of the material that came with it, which should include information on how to do your Entrance Counseling (the majority of schools now have you do this on-line) and signing your promissory note (the legal agreement to repay the loan, READ IT CAREFULLY!), which your school may also allow you to do on-line. If you cannot sign on-line, ask the school to mail it to you and complete it carefully, making sure you understand that you have to complete all of the information requested about the references. Mail it back to the school. Paper notes takes up to 3 weeks to process, on-line notes are faster (print one for your records). Disbursement or payment of the funds is at a date set by the school, for new freshmen this is usually 30 days after the start of school, although some schools may delay and some may be able to disburse sooner than that. You won't get any refunds until then, and then not until the school has written the check. Most schools, however, consider your bill paid by the loan and other financial aid once you have a signed promissory note that they can verify. Of course, if you haven't filed a FAFSA yet, you may need to make payment on your fall charges. If you have filed, but have not yet heard, ask your financial aid office about what will happen on the billing due date if you have not made other payment arrangements.

Answer by elnadia75
I say the same thing the member above me said. I transferred form Kaplan to westwood online technology.but I was lucky because they use the same lender so the process it was less than five days filling all the paper and signing the mater promissory note and all of that then the school get paid 30 days.

Seal the envelope, slap on a stamp and put the red flag up on the mailbox. Easy enough. But what happens when you want to mail something to 20,000 people? It might not fit in your mailbox, but it can be just as easy â€" as long as you know what you’re getting into.

I’ll go ahead and preface this with: I could never give you all of the information you’d need to undertake a successful and competitively priced bulk mailing. Consider this a precursor to your research.

First, make sure you do your homework, even if you are working with a professional mail service vendor. If you don’t know what questions to ask, they might not tell you. You can easily end up learning an expensive lesson (Trust me. I know.).

Be sure to check postal rates and class regulations.

There are tricks and loopholes all along the way. For example, sending an oversized postcard costs less than the standard 44 cent stamp, but if you have “Return Service Requested” printed on the back, you will be changed the full 44 cents for each returned piece. Also, you might pay the same postage for a 20-page catalog as you would a 40-page catalogue, so don’t assume anything when it comes to postage and regulations! It’s one of the most important areas to research.

Now, if you’re a nonprofit and low on cash flow, there’s good news. Nonprofits get a discount. Even though you’re eligible for a postage discount, you need to file paperwork with the post office. And this might seem obvious, but don’t forget to include a return address.

That one small omission will cost you for profit prices.

And then, there’s the dreaded distribution list. Thousands of addresses â€" a never-ending scroll through Excel. So what if your list is old and you don’t want to pay to send your mail piece to thousands of invalid or old address? Don’t worry! Most mail vendors offer a list-cleaning service that will pull invalid addresses and inform you if someone has moved.

Good luck to all of you direct mailers out there! And feel free to email me if you want to know what question I didn’t know to ask our mail vendor.

Or don’t. I’m trying to forget about it!

Yes u can get a loan of 20000....

Answer by Luik
Don't count on it... $ 20000 is a lot of money to lend to somebody who will loose his/her job and have to find another...

Answer by Charles
Yes, but it may take a while to approve and you'll pay a lot of interest afterwards.

Answer by A Hunch
Getting a $ 20000 personal loan to purchase a mobile home is not purchasing the mobile home in cash. It means you will have a personal loan instead of a mobile home loan. One is unsecured (personal loan) One is semi-secured. (semi-secured means it's a secured loan, but the bank really doesn't want the collateral = the mobile home). You are more likely to be eligible for the semi-secured loan.

Answer by smahadevan39
When you approach the Bank for a personal loan, take with you salary certificate / income certificate to convince them that you can make the repayment without any problem.

Answer by Rob
Seriously? Do Not buy a 'mobile home" they only go down in real value. Do Not buy any home when u r moving to a new area. u will often over pay and get the wrong area. Do not Buy when u looking for job - Rent. Rent is lower cost when ur money is limited. getting a loan from banks need a job of at least 6months. getting a 20K loan for property will have higher rate + costs than normal home loans. Rent and save ur money to buy a real house.

We all know about the military loans when you are a current or former member of the Marines, Navy, or some other armed force branches. One of the great benefits of military loans is that they are offered at interest rates below those offered to civilians. And maybe you have known or not about the benefits of these loans. Through this article, you can get more information about it.

The application process for a military loan is simple, but thorough. You will be required to show details about your military service as well as personal information common with any financial loan. The analysis of the application will take into account your level of military service, your credit, and your need as well. No matter what your particular situation, there is likely a specific military loan that will work for you.

Another great benefit of military loans is that you rarely have to put down any collateral.

You won't have to worry about your assets like your car or home. The loans themselves are completely unsecured loans. However, military loans come with low interest rates as well as no early payment penalties, so they end up being easier to handle than most unsecured loans. Overall, these loans will help you make the home repairs, or pay the high interest debt you need to without putting a bunch of your own hard earned cash into it.

When seeking your military loan, the number one factor that will help or hurt you is your credit history. Even with a military loan and its low interest rates, you still need to have a stable credit history to get the best possible deal. Though being a member of the armed forces will help you with discounts and rebates and possibly on borderline credit rating, a good credit rating will be the key in the end.

You can still get a military loan if you have bad credit, but the rates will not be as great as they are with a good credit history.

Military loans are a great deal for those who are currently or formerly of the USAF, US Army, Navy, or even the National Guard. Any member of the armed forces can secure these loans with a little work. Though you don't have to have perfect credit, it doesn't hurt to go along with your loan application.

That is when I will need to start paying back student loans, and was wondering if the military had any sort of payment plans for people who have student loans who are joining. If it helps, I'm seriously considering the army, and if not probably the air force but do not know the mos yet obviously. Best answer for Paying back student loans in military?:

Answer by Living the Dream
If you enlist, you can sign up for the Student Loan Repayment plan, in which over the first three years of your enlistment, the Army will pay up to I think maybe $ 56k (it used to be $ 74 but I know it's come down since I got mine) of qualifying loans. You still have to pay interest over those three years. The payment goes straight to your lenders. You get a separate W-2 to claim it in your income, but it's at a lower tax rate than if they were to pay you the money directly. I don't know how, but I know I paid next to nothing for taxes on mine. The AF and Navy also have repayment options, but they cap out at a much lower level, $ 10k I think. If you commission as an officer, there is no sort of loan repayment option, unless you are a nurse or one of another select few expertise majors.

Answer by The Provost
There is a Student Loan Repayment program in the Army. You will need to contact a Recruiter for the latest information. When I recruited, the programs were primarily aimed at Officer Applicants. I am including a link from the Army's Human Resources command website with more info.

Answer by GPack
Both of these answers are right, just make sure it is IN YOUR CONTRACT!!!! One of the big motivating factors for me to enlist was to get the student loan repayment. When looking over my contract before signing it, I specifically asked if I was getting student loan repayment, and they straight up lied and said I was when I was not. Make sure you check, double check, and triple check your contract before signing.

Answer by Mrsjvb
CLRP is going away.. only a few jobs will qualify for it and the amount that gets paid off is rapidly being diminished as well( the AF has already bottomed out at $ 10K max)

Answer by Rabb
Yes they will, depends were and what. But anything from $ 50-$ 70k. Worth checking out, the down side is being in a war which seems to be happening all the time now.

You may be thinking wondering "Are 1 hour payday loans more expensive?", when you are in need of some emergency cash. This kind of borrowing can actually be quite reasonable, and can provide important funds that you need in a hurry. Here is a look at this type of loan, and what you may expect in the UK.

Cost

Some people may ask "Are 1 hour payday loans more expensive?" and believe that a quick loan is very costly, but this can often be a misconception. You might see a loan advertised at a 1700 representative annual percentage rate, and think that is an outrageous amount. In reality, it is not.

Lenders are required by law to list the annual percentage rate (APR) of their loans. In most cases, this is a good thing, if you are buying a car or a property. However, a payday loan is something that you repay on your next pay period. Annual percentages do not apply, because you are not stretching your loan payments out over a period of years.

In fact, many so called "low interest" loans can be very expensive.

Suppose you borrow 60,000 pounds for a new home. You may find financing that is as low as five percent, and this may seem to be very inexpensive. However, if you pay on the loan for the entire thirty years, you will be paying almost 56,000 pounds in interest, on a 60,000-pound loan. This is why annual percentage rates can sometimes be deceiving. In other words, it depends on the terms of the loan.

Suppose you need to borrow 400 pounds. There may be an emergency, and you may need some immediate car repairs. However, you may not have the money until your next pay period.

If you do not have the car repaired, there may be no way to get to and from work. This is a where a quick payday loan can be the solution to some major problems.

Here is how your loan might work. The first thing you need to do is go online to the lender. You will need to fill out an application. This is not very involved and does not take a lot of your time. You need to provide some common information with the application. It will ask for your employment information. Most places will have a limit on what your income must be and what your length of employment needs to be. You may not need to be employed long at the same place, but you may need to be making at least 500 pounds per month to qualify.

When you apply for a one-hour loan on the Internet, you will need to have some way to instantly receive your money, and this should be in the form of a bank account. This way, the lender can place the money directly into your account. You do not have to worry about cashing a check and then waiting for the check to clear. It can sometimes take days to weeks for a check to clear a financial institution.

You may not need to supply information about your past credit history. In fact, some lenders may not require a credit check at all. This makes the process very fast. However, if you allow them to check your credit history, it may improve your odds of being approved for a loan.

Once you apply, it may only take an hour to have the money that you need. If you are borrowing 400 pounds, you may need to repay 500. The good thing about this is the charges are upfront. You know exactly how much you need to repay. There are no hidden fees or charges, and you repay the money on your next pay period. There is nothing to do to repay the loan, as it will be taken from your checking account. You do not have to leave your home to complete the process.

Summary

Are 1 hour payday loans more expensive than normal loans? At first, it may appear as such, but when you look closely, you will see that this kind of borrowing is very affordable. High annual percentage rates do not apply, as this kind of loan is paid back in a very short amount of time. This way, interest cannot slowly add up, as it does with mortgages or car financing. The entire process is quick and easy, also.

ILR is rarely refused on maintenance requirements, however, she ought to find some work, even part time to ensure success. You also need to make sure that you have not been claiming one penny extra in benefits as a result of her presence in the household. UKBA will check with DWP as part of the ILR process so if there are any irregularities, sort them out before she makes an application. If she is found to have claimed, she will be refused ILR and removed.

However since you have shared all current financial situation, why can't your wife start working rather struggle life on benefits. Mate this is 21st Century and some sort of work or even part time can add value to life..... Good luck!

Question by chelsy132: How can you get into a home without any money down, bad credit and substancial debt? I have been in and out of the hospital and am unable to work , my husband makes over $ 55,000 a year but we are a family of 5 crammed into a 2 bedroom apt. He has student loans and bad credit from divorce. He had a home from his previous marriage, but I have never been a home owner. The question is how can we get out of this hole we are in and start moving on with our life? Iwant to try to be in a home b4 my 3 yr old son starts school.. because the schools where I currently live are unsatisfactory. we currently pay $ 650 a month in rent .. which is more than most of my friends house payments so I am wondering how do I get started trying to improve our situation and get into a home .. with $ 1,000 in debt each month and no way to possibly save for a down payment of any kind. We have paid our rent every month, that is one thing we do make sure gets paid . have been in and out of the hospital and am unable to work , though we have not asked or have been receiving any assistance what so ever. My conditions include spinal bone growths, organ failure and chronic pain , which makes it difficult to just care for my son and my 2 step sons (which are all under the age of 12), Since my doctors have told me I am physically unable to work right now options for going back to work are not really there. My husband works 12 hour days at his job, that he has held for over 7 years. We have 1 car( that is paid off). Our rent of $ 650 a month that we do pay does not include our utlities or anything else. Our phone bills, electric, cable, water all get paid as well and we have a good payment history with them as well. Our credit debt includes :my husbands government student loans, credit cards from his previous marriage, and one month of car insurance not paid by me after I went into the hospital. we are looking for a home in the $ 50-$ 100k price range .. so that we can make our payments. Try going to a new home builder. Like getting a new car, a new home will probably be easier to get into than a used home. My wife are only 24 years old and also have bad credit (560 for me 580 for her) and debt ($ 3k owed to an apt. complex for broken lease among other things). Combined we only make about $ 40-45k a year which is less than your husband. The home builder that we were with couldn't get us financed in house with them but because they wanted our business our loan officer referred us to another company that got us approved. This company was actually able to use my wife's credit with my income level but this might have worked well for use because we work in the same company. To be honest with you your financial situation seems to balance out with ours because we have not kids but we do pay for a $ 450/mo. car note and our mortgage is $ 950/mo. as opposed to the $ 650 you say that your friends are paying for mortgage. The only thing you must be aware of is property taxes. Property taxes range in different areas but they may be anywhere from $ 2,000-$ 6,000 or more per year depending on where you live. Your lien holder can include this into your note as a monthly payment and many times will depending on your type of loan (conventional, fha, 80/20, etc.). Our taxes for our area are about $ 4,500 a year which puts us at about an additional $ 400/mo. bringing our total monthly payment to around $ 1350. If you think that getting a used house might be cheaper, do your research. We were able to buy our house for $ 130k which is about the price that the used homes were selling for. It only made sense to get a brand new house that cost as much as a used house. The figures however will still run the same with the same taxes and same interest rate only you might have a tougher time getting a loan because there is no one pushing to get your business except for the loan officer and/or real estate agent who can only do so much for you. New home builders have many contacts that make buying a house a possibility for anyone.
